My winter staples for casual wear are:
Coats that I can throw over jeans to keep me warm and dress them up a bit. I have a great 3/4 double breasted coat and a long black trench that I wear to death. Along with a black leather jacket.
Sleeveless parka's are another staple that I tend to throw over jeans/white tshirt. I have heaps of these and find they keep me warm and are not too restrictive to move in etc. Along with lots of fleecy warm windcheaters and a couple of good pairs of tracky dacks;
Pashmina/scarves that I can wear with shirts/tops and my coats. They are great for keeping you extra warm and also dressing up shirts/tops. The Tie Shop has a great selection of woollen pashmina's in all sorts of colours at a fairly decent price.
Kneehigh boots are another staple for me in winter. I live in them with jeans (tucked in or underneath) and also with skirts for work. I prefer flat heeled ones for weekends and higher heeled ones for work.
Long cardigans would be the other staple for me. I have quite a few that are great for throwing over a white tshirt and jeans. I prefer the really long chunky knit ones (knee length) that you can fasten with a thick black belt.
Other than that, I tend to still wear a lot of my summer long sleeved tops/shirts and jeans. I just throw a coat, scarf, pasmina or cardi over the top of them with boots.
Good luck with your move to Vic. I hope you love it down here and this info helps a bit.
