Hi there!

Just was wondering what everyone chose to labour in? I always thought I might go the massive t-shirt option..is that practical? Hospital gowns give me the heeby jeebies, or will I really have no time to care? biggrin.gif

I am so limited in clothes that are comfy..silly question alert..did you go to hospital in what you gave birth in or did you take it and change?

Thanks!

I was naked in the shower, then they put me in a hospital gown which got ripped off as soon Oliver came out for skin to skin cuddles....honestly you won't be thinking about comfort on that part of your body at the time laugh.gif

A big t-shirt with Maddie, and a hospital gown with Delaney. smile.gif I preferred the gown, it was easy to take off for our first cuddles and breastfeed.

I laboured in a cheap nighty and then when I had to have my emergency c-sect I had to wear one of those glamourous hospital gowns laugh.gif

This time if im lucky to have a VBAC I'll go the nighty again. A lot of women like to birth naked, so thats an option too.

if hospital gowns give you the heebie jeebies, i am certain i have seen cute one on etsy in the past.

With Keira I gave birth in the clothes I wore that day. A white singlet top and brown skirt. They ended up with stains all over them but came out after a soak.

With Liam I spent the night before in hospital so when I got up the next mornning to be induced I just wore my pjs and took the bottoms off in the last stage.

Great question - I've been thinking the same thing for months now. I asked my mum who is a midwife. I wanted a big t-shirt/nightie, and mum said ' you will get blood and mess everywhere - if you want to wear a shirt expect to just throw it out afterwards ' . Hence I'm going the hospital gown option now tongue.gif

I had all intentions of giving birth in the super-large t-shirt I had brought along... but TBH - I couldnt stand anything around my neck... too hot!!

So it was the hospital gown for me... gave me a semblance of privacy, but also allowed for movement if i got too hot.

And in the end it was a good thing I wore it, as the gown got very mucky... sweaty, fluidy and Hudson even Christened the gown with his first meconium poo!

Last time I was naked as soon as I walked into my room (I got under the shower and bath) and a gown was put on me when I eventually lay on the bed for a progress check/birth.

I was in no state to even care what I was or wasn't wearing.

So I birthed in that and pulled the front down when he was born. It got all dirty once he was born, so best to get mess on a gown than my nightie.

I guess i'll do the same again but I'll pack my nanna nightie which unbuttons at the top just in case.

I had grand plans, but ended up birthing in a strapless dress...like something you would wear at the beach. It was nice and cool, allowed everyone access to the bits that would need access, and was somewhat presentable if i decided to go for a walk or move around the suite.

It was fairly gross afterwards, but all the stains came out after a long soak. I haven't been able to wear it again though- it will always be the dress i gave birth in! smile.gif

I had a labour bag packed with a big t shirt and heaps of clothes to change into. I ended up birthing in water absolutely starkers. There was no time... I remember 2 midwifes getting a sheet to cover me when I walked from the examination room to the birthing suite.

Trust me you will not care, you are in such a different world when you are in labour.

I ended up giving birth in a hospital gown..i wasnt impressed when they gave it to me prior to induction but as the syncto drip started working i cared less & less laugh.gif
Lollies
I birthed in a huge T-shirt style nighty, it had buttons down the front for easy access, but in all honesty it was baggy enough anyway that the buttons didn't matter. It was just a cheapy form K-mart, one that I wouldn't care if it got wrecked.

I like ***Amy****'s idea of a strapless dress, that would work too & in labour sometimes you have the option of going for walks.

With Noah I was induced and had the lovely hospital gown laugh.gif

With Mitch - I had everything packed - trackies - long t-shirt - a nana nightie - I wore what I had on to the hospital which was a pair of trackies and a long shirt...I wore that until I decided that the shower was Bliss laugh.gif From then on I was naked and I didn't care who or what saw me laugh.gif However when I had to hop from the shower and onto the bed to give birth (that was my choice - the midwife had set up in the bathroom cubicle ready for me to deliver him on the floor - he was crowing and I was like hell no - get me on that bed laugh.gif ) Once on the bed they threw a warm blanket on me as I felt like I was exposed laugh.gif

So i I guess pack a few things and see how you go on the day - nothing goes to plan wink.gif I never thought that I would give birth naked laugh.gif Just expect that the clothes you labour in will get extremely gross ph34r.gif

for the first couple of hours I laboured in a long, almost knee length maternity top and slacks.

When all the initial baby heart and contraction monitoring had been done, I tried the bath for a while for pain relief, and after the bath swapped to an old cheap knee length nightie.

I laboured in the nighty up until the eleventh hour when they needed to put the epidural in, so they put me in a gown.

To be honest, I thought I was going to be embarassed about being naked or being on show.. I wasn't really 'on show' so to speak until the end of proceedings, but by the end of my 20 hour labour I really didn't care too much at all.. it's a hospital after all smile.gif

Melanie79
Actually Molly, I had an epidural too and it was at this time they asked me to put it on, I guess because from that point onwards I had to stay in bed..didn't really think of that, just did whatever the midwife said laugh.gif

Oh and definitely didn't care less who saw what, over the next few days I couldn't tell you how many people had a look there to check on things ph34r.gif

I was mostly naked too. I laboured in the shower at home then put on a tracksuit to go to hospital in. That came off pretty swiftly so I could get in the bath. I didn't stay in the bath long but I stayed nude from there on in. It felt much more comfortable.

I bought a couple of large strappy nighties on special from target to labour in but obviously didn't use them. I will pack them again this time just in case I suddenly get shy.

I wore my mu-mu to hospital, wore it for maybe 1 hr? Until I got into the bath, after I got out of the bath and laboured until I got the epi, I was naked, then they just put blankets over me, when I started pushing, i ws so hot I went back to being naked, gave birth to Kaele the naked, and stayed that way for ages, I think I went to surgery naked just a gown loosely over my top?
cobie1987
i was in a really large t-shirt that i originally bought for FH, i stole it outta his cupboard the night they told me i was going 2 be induced and just after ollie was born the shirt went and i had blankets on only for bout an hr.
he still has the top now and it is one of his fav shirts...
Eeyore_Fan
umm i was in tracksuit pants and a singlet
the singlet stayed till she was born then naked even in the operation then they covered me up with a hospital gown after the surgery and stayed like that till later on

With Mat and Lauren I was in a hospital gown fro mthe word go, I was stuck in bed due to inductions and monitoring both times so wasn't bothered.

With Lauren I just had my dressing gown and a pair of bonds pants on when I was walking around.
~Melissa~
I went in in tracksuit pants and a singlet top.

At some point I took the trackies off for a check but put undies back on and was just in undies and a singlet. It wouldn't have mattered if I had a longer nightie or top on as they were having lots of issues with the monitoring so I had my singlet hiked up over my belly anyway so was practically just in underwear.

When I had the epidural etc etc everything came off and I put a hospital gown on and that's what I was wearing when I gave birth.

I asked this question in another thread about this because I had grand plans too. I took a singlet top and knickers but it ended up being a hospital gown - about three of them! I was in the shower for four-hours of the ten-hour labour so obviously was naked then. Outside the bathroom I was in the gown. The one I gave birth in was so gross at the end but it was gross for a lovely reason. wub.gif

my bare skin.

When I got out of the shower (was in there for nearly 3 hours?) I had a hospital gown on for a little while, but it was annoying me so I took it off and laboured for the remaining 7 or more hours completely naked.

The gas and pethidine must have worked so well I didn't care wink.gif
Heather :)
Utterly and completely naked!!! I had just gotten out of the shower to be checked, was fully dilated and so started pushing on the bed naked. It was great, when bubby arrived they put warm blankets on us and it was soooo nice!
-Megs-
With Jack it was the ever so flattering hospital gown. With Lew it was a green dress I'd been wearing that day, I'd had a bath at home while in labour and it was the easiest thing to throw on before heading to the hospital. He as born 15 minutes after arrival at hosp so no time to take it off. Thankfully it was stretchy and had a low neckline so I could easily pull it down to feed.

I wore pj pants and a large t-shirt (one of hubby's0 during the day whilst I laboured at home. I went walking down the street in this get up and couldn't have cared less tongue.gif

At one point I did remove my pj pants and just wrapped myself in towels as I was leaking sooooo much water I got sick of changing pads / undies / pants.

Arriving at hospital I was wearing t-shirt and pj pants. I removed my pants to have an internal at which point they said I was ready to push. I was sooooo hot...I ripped my t-shirt off and stayed naked for the next five hours whilst birthing, being stitched and relaxing with bub and family afterward. I have gorgeous pics of my parents staring moony eyed at Cate with my boobs hanging out everywhere...and no one cared less! biggrin.gif
Channy
Started off in a singlet and 3/4 trackies...then moved into an ugly big nightie I bought for the occasion...then ended up butt naked. I was quite prudish before and ended up naked, just didn't care!

With Jasper - the hospital gown, which was just draping over me

With Jovie - a tshirt I slept in that night. (Is it weird that I kept it, even though you can see blood stains?? lol. I loved that shirt, can't bare to throw it out. It's been washed of course).
Angel_Elle
when having milly i started off in a bikini top and undies. lost the undies halfway thru coz of the constant internals. Then they removed the top at the end so that i could have cuddles straight away.

With Liam didnt get asked as soon as i was wheeled into the delivery room the told me to put on the gown.. i would of been happy to be naked TBH the gown got in their way when trying let me have skin to skin towards the end.

I wore one of those stretchy singlet tops with a built in shelf bra with Gemma, my boobs were so huge I wanted some support for them. laugh.gif On the bottom I had on a stretchy skirt and knickers. The skirt I really only put on when I went to the toilet as there were no en suites in that hospital and you had to walk down the hall passed everybody to get to the loo. The top was covered in blood so ended up in the bin in the labour suite, along with my undies.

I plan on wearing the same this time around too.

Lauren make sure you take something in with you and don't rely on having a hospital gown as they only have so many so there may not be any left by the time you get there.
~Ki~
I wore baggy shorts and a loose t-shirt, until I jumped in the pool, then it was just my bra.
Avery
Gave birth in my birthday suit laugh.gif

I wore a long black maxi dress to hospital, then changed into a shorter, stretchy black nighty for the labour, but was only in that for a few hours

I got in the shower about half way through, and didnt get dressed again.

I was very "anti-naked" before labour - but once I was in the moment, I didnt care less!

Thanks for all the responses ladies..so helpful! Thanks jo - I won't be relying on the gowns! I think by the sounds of it, I really won't be worrying about what I am wearing!

Cheers xo

i think i was wearing a green singlet top that i had been wearing to bed...but possibly nothing, i can't remember biggrin.gif
Rosita
I wore a daggy big nighty. I was very worried about being naked (I'm a bit of a prude like that) and my oldest, daggiest undies (not on purpose by accident, I kept apologising for their state to the midwives). It had buttions I could undo for feeding. I had to have monitors on so the midwives pulled it up and draped a sheet over said daggy undies (guess they didn't awant to see them either).

I expected it to look like I had worn it at an abbatior but there wasn't a single mark on it when I look it off after Angus was born
