The woman clearly does not have the resources to cope with the 6 children she already has. How selfish and irresponsible to have IVF so she could produce 8 more.

I'm not a mum yet, so I don't understand the desire.

If you have 6 kids and a "not very good" living arrangement, why would you go for IVF to have even 1 more let alone 8!?!

Its probably going to be a very loving home but I just don't get it.

That's a bit sad but the look of a home doesn't necessarily mean it's not a loving or stable environment. I wonder if there is a husband/partner around?
lizzums
There is no husband or partner she is single and raising the children on her own with her mothers help. Her mother wants out now she thinks what her daughter has done is terrible.

The fertility centre she went to is now under investigation.

I would never suggest that she shouldn't have more children because she apparently can't afford a curtain for the bedroom (as an example), income doesn't matter to me as long as your children are loved and well fed.

What concerns me is the reporters description of cleanliness, or lack thereof, like I said she clearly has issues coping with the six she already has and it's going to get a heck of alot worse.

I haven't read any articles but mess (or cleanliness rather) is something a lot of kids don't really care for anyway!

Does anyone know if she had IVF knowing she would definitely have 8? Pardon my ignorance, but 8 fertilised eggs is kind of unusual isn't it, but it's still a matter of trying to have the best shot of just one taking? Someone will have to enlighten me sorry.

She has 6 transfered
The 3 sets of twins are all from IVF as well...
All the children are from the same sperm donor.

I have been thinking about this overnight. Whilst I certainly think it is a messy house, I have seen worse IRL too, especially when there are a lot of children. My mother was one of ten children in a 3 bedroom home. She has nothing but fond memories of sharing a double bed with three of her sisters.
So while I think maybe this Mum and her children may need more help now with so many more children, I am not necessarily thinking that the size and appearance of a house is indicative of how wanted and loved the children within it are.... Those are my thoughts smile.gif

I've been doing some reading about this. Apparently she recently declared bankruptcy, and has been on a disability pension since 2001. Many American sites have people who discuss their outrage that she conceived these children (and her 6 others) through state-funded IVF treatment. A couple of sites state 8 embryos were returned, although others state 6.

Chances are she's hoping the $ she makes from her story about how she came to be the mother of 14 children (whilst being a single mother on welfare) will fund a larger home dry.gif

The woman is a nutter & should NEVER have been allowed this last round of IVF. And whether she had 6 or 8 embryos transferred is inconsequential. She should've been refused treatment altogether given her single status & her 6 other children.

the 'early show' this morning was stating that 3 of her older children have disabilities as well that are not being seen to properly because she cannot afford it sad.gif

Wow, that additional information shines a new perspective on this. That's incredibly irresponsible.
bika
those photos of her house arent that bad! Im sure we all have perfect looking houses 100% of the time rolleyes.gif . I only have one child and things get pretty messy here!

I think its disgusting that she has been allowed to do this though! clearly she isnt mentally stable.
i hope they review and change the IVF laws.

And this is why it is illegal to transfer for than 2 or 3 embryos on some countries. It's a huge strain on the mother and the health system.

This is a side issue and again please pardon my ignorance but why is it a problem for a single person to access IVF?
lizzums
I have no issue with a single person using IVF.
I have issue with how she has abused the system and brought lives into the world that she does not have the means to care for.

Am more disgusted by this with each new thing that I read or see, or that even comes out of her own mouth since I watched an interview with her yesterday.

I agree with Lizzums. I don't have a problem with single people using IVF providing they are doing so with the needs of the resulting child/ren first & foremost in mind. I don't think that is totally the point here though.

IVF, whether by a couple or a single person, should not be undertaken for some warped fairytale (for lack of a better word) notion that they want to have a large family no matter what it takes & how the resulting children suffer along the way. It's the "whole package" this woman presents that is so disturbing in this story. And even with her single status aside it's still pretty disturbing.

I hope she does get the money she is looking for and gets a better living arangement for all the kids.
I hope she doesn't spend the money on herself...

I'm sorry, but that house does not appear to me 'messy' in the 'clean but messy' sense. It appears dirty. Hopefully, it's because it has 6 kids and a working grandmother in it, not because that's how it always looks. blink.gif

How does the welfare system work in the U.S? I know she recieves some food stamps, but does the single parent pension exist in a similar form to here in Australia?

I watched an interview with the Octuplets mother, and many of her responses seemed very odd and quite disjointed. She appeared to relish the celebrity, and spoke of having enough money to have more IVF treatment.

From what I could gather from the interview, she chose to have IVF because she did not have a partner, not because she had trouble concieving. Surely a healthy woman of childbearing age with no fertility problems would have a high likelyhood of carrying all 6 embryos to term. She didn't transfer all 6 because she was worried some wouldn't take, she transfered all 6 so she'd have 6, and had 8.

I felt very sorry for her mother, who was in tears and stated that her daughter went ahead with her latest round of IVF to the detriment of her other 6 children, and against the wishes of her, their grandmother and from what I can gather, their primary breadwinner.
