My Birth Story
After many false starts and what was probably only Braxton-Hicks, by Thursday night (10/3/2011) and my due date, I thought the contractions were starting to get regular. They were still very bearable and although I wasn’t sleeping through them, I think that was more the excitement than anything. We decided to give it another few hours to make sure before we rang mum in Perth (2 hours away), so she left at around 4am Friday morning, but within an hour of arriving at our house, they stopped again. Mum and I went out to the shops to get a few things, and by the time we came home around 2.30ish that afternoon they had started again, and by 8pm that night they were quite strong and around 7-5 mins apart, although still quite bearable. We rang the hospital, and the midwife said give it an hour and if they were still strong to come in, in an hour. By 9pm the contractions were still strong and close, so we went to the hospital (for about the 4th time in the last week) but as I walked with hubby down the ward corridor they stopped again!! They hooked up the CTG monitor to me again and the contractions were quite weak and sporadic, so they suggested I could stay there or go home with a sleeping tablet, as it could all start in the morning. By this stage I hadn’t slept in two days, so jumped at the chance to finally get some Zzz… Got home and had the tablet with warm milk, then a warm shower planning to go to bed after, but it seems bubs had the other ideas. As soon as I lay down the contractions started, but they were very strong and by 12.30 in the morning was back at the hospital sobbing in pain. The midwife did an internal examination, saw that I was almost 6cms dilated, and gave me the gas straight away. We then went down the hall to the birthing suite. From then until about 3am, I sucked on the gas and tried a bath, as I dilated to 10cms. I don’t really remember this, but apparently I told the midwife Sarah that I shouldn’t take a bath because I wouldn’t be able to get in and out easily all the time, and Sarah telling me that I shouldn’t worry as I could definitely wee in the bath, and me telling her how disgusting that was! As it happened I did try a bath, but although I was convinced during pregnancy water would help during labour, I found half-reclining in a bath was NOT the best, and I was far better sitting up on a recliner chair, still sucking away. By 3am I was ready to push, and climbed up on the bed. My wonderful Dr, who is my usual GP and saw me for every ante-natal visit (and miscarriage) for the past 9 months, was actually rostered off that weekend, but the duty Dr Martin was lovely as well. (He actually was from a nearby part of England as my step-dad, and so sounds very similar, and I asked him about 5 times if he was English!!) They took the gas off me so I feel the urge to push (damn them!!) which I found the most painful but what really helped was the big mirror being brought over so I could see him crowning and the thought they all told me I could finally sleep when I got him out (although I was that excited I didn't sleep anyway) and I remember telling Sarah and Martin I to cut me open and get him out that way as I was too tired to push anymore and it hurt - even though his head was halfway out already! Anthony wwas finally born at 4.07am, on the morning of Saturday the 12th of March. Mel x -------------------- ![]() |
