I've decided to go gluten freebfor our bub. He usually has a big porridge breakfast so I need an alternative. The rice porridge u can only find with sultanas in them which does not suit him due to the salycilates. I know there are gluten free alternatives but not sure what they are. Any help would be appreciated.

Lowan do make a rice flake for porridge with NO fruit in it - we use it for Lottie (and now she's bigger we add psyllium, almond meal and cinnamon).

It comes in a yellow bag - our local Coles has it, but Safeway doesn't. Worth hunting around for, though!

Thanks girls. I did read this morning that oats are gluten free which shocked me tbh. Will head to a big Coles today which has a health food shop opposite it. We did gluten free with our eldest 3 years ago and did find that hard to do but I agree there are more and more things coming out.

Hi Heather - oats are technically gluten free, however often they pick up gluten contamination during processing (the same reason that some rice milks are NOT gluten free). If you're dealing with low gluten tolerance, then oats MIGHT be ok. Alternatively, freedom foods make a "wheat free" rolled oats quick oats which has been processed totally seperately and hence ok.

Some people are so senstive that "trace" amounts in normal oats will set them off, and some people are ok with the tiny amounts. It's mostly trial and error. I'd suggest the freedom foods oats if you want to be careful.

I hope all that makes sense

Oats contain a protein quite similar to wheat gluten.
Some Coeliacs can not tolerate oats... I am one of those Coeliacs...

Most Australian oats are contaminated by Gluten anyway.

These are some of the porridge I have had in the past

It's available at Coles and I think Woolies too

These guys do a GF Fruit Free muesli (and they do bars as well, which are awesome!)

Alternatively you could buy Quinoa and soak it in hot water, it's high in protein and it's really yummy. I buy the Quinoa flakes for porridge and I also buy the grain for making a "cous cous" type meal.
