From the moment we conceived our now 6-day-old daughter I have had extremely sensitive/painful nipples. Throughout the entire pregnancy I couldn't have anything even brush past them, they were that sensitive.

Now, nearly a week after Mahli's birth, they are no better. I though with the birth that the sensitivity would ease or disappear completely but that's not the case and every time she latches on the pain is almost unbearable. I'm 100% certain the pain isnt due to poor attachment or anything else like cracked nipples because my nipples look fine.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? I'd like some reassurance that it won't last for ever!

TIA

Yes!! Unfortunately I have to tell you it continued until I finished breastfeeding. My nipples would just be so so sensitive, particularly to heat/cold (like after a shower). I was often in the bathroom in tears because it would hurt so much.

I didn't find anything that helped, just holding them and trying to keep them warm as much as possible, and eventually it got less, and then went away.

I'm so glad I'm not alone! It's horrible but I guess I can only hope it goes away soon, before I stop BF as that is hopefully months away!

Yep - sorry 3 months into breastfeeding and although less sensitive than pregnancy still pretty sensitive.

Hope they improve for you!

Same here smile.gif. They are still a bit sensitive and will hurt a little with initial attachment, but it's much much better than the first 2 weeks of BF. I don't feel like crying every time she latches on any more.

Ditto to everything Sakorsha said. The first 2 or 3 weeks were hell but now they have calmed down a little. Still hurt when anything grazes them but they are no where near as painful now

Hi There,
I feel your pain - during pregnancy mine were so sensitive even having a shower was painful!

I have now been breastfeeding for 12 months and have found they are now no longer as sensitive but the painful sensitivity continued for about 3 months post birth.

I found warm heat packs helped ease the pain.

I hope this helps.

Ish

Oh Girls, I couldn't have come across this post at a better time!
I don't have any advice to offer, just sharing...
I'm off to the doctor in 10 mins. Because my right nipple is extremely sensitive! I'm 20 weeks pregnant today. Having a shower is such a night mare for me, as is sleeping on my right side.

Anyhow, I've noticed that I've got a bit of redness around my nipple too. I was home alone last night did some googling!!!! I should NOT have done that at all. It gave me some pretty scary answers and that has made me so paranoid.

I'm hoping the dr will give me some better news. Fingers crossed!!

It did get better but took a long time for me. Try something like Lansinoh to make a bit of a protective barrier smile.gif
