Irish cops finally track down mysterious 'Prawo Jazdy'

Thursday, February 19, 2009

He was a mystery criminal with many identities - a Polish driver who committed over 50 driving offences around Ireland, always giving the police a different address and evading justice. Who was this elusive 'Prawo Jazdy' character, who could snub his nose at the law with such impunity?

The answer has now been revealed, as embarrassed Irish police discovered that 'Prawo Jazdy' is Polish for 'driving licence'.

An internal Garda memo reported in Irish papers on Thursday said officers taking details of Polish traffic offenders had been mistakenly using 'Prawo Jazdy', printed in the top right corner of the driving licence, as the holder's name.

'Prawo Jazdy is actually the Polish for driving licence and not the first and surname on the licence,' the police memo, dated June 2007, said.

'It is quite embarrassing to see the system has created Prawo Jazdy as a person with over 50 identities.'

A Garda spokesman declined to comment on the reports.

Hackers add porn to tourism website

Thursday, February 19, 2009

A council was today investigating how internet hackers managed to post pornographic images on a website promoting tourism in Cambridge.

The Visit Cambridge site, overseen by the city council, was taken offline yesterday morning.

The authority said photographs promoting the city had been swapped with nude and explicit shots.

A spokesman said an investigation had been launched into how it happened.

He added: 'The site will remain offline until such time that we're confident no-one can hack into it.'

Rare pink dolphin spotted

A rare pink albino bottlenose dolphin has been photographed in a US lake.

Skipper Erik Rue snapped the pink star of its pod in Calcasieu Lake, Louisiana, saying it looked like it had just come out of a paint booth.

"I just happened to see a little pod of dolphins, and I noticed one that was a little lighter," he was quoted as saying in the Daily Mail.

"It was absolutely stunningly pink."

The juvenile pink dolphin has become a star attraction for visitors and is believed to have taken up residence in the Calcasieu Ship Channel.

It sometimes strays from its mother but never swims too far away from its pod, according to Captain Rue.

Although a species of pink dolphin exists in the Amazon — Inia geoffrensis or pink Amazon River dolphin — this pink mammal is thought to be the world's only pink bottlenose dolphin.

A senior biologist with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, Regina Asmutis-Silvia, said she had never seen a dolphin that colour.

"While this animal looks pink, it is an albino which you can notice in the pink eyes," she was quoted as saying.

"Albinism is a genetic trait and it unclear as to the type of albinism this animal inherited."

Crime on credit
March 09, 2009
Article from: The Australian
CHARLESTON, West Virginia: Would-be robbers take note: Don't use your debit card during a holdup.
A West Virginia man who police say attempted to rob a convenience store instead ended up buying a soft drink with his debit card - ultimately leading to his arrest.
Shawn Thomas Lester, 33, told the store clerk he had a gun and wanted all the money in the cash register.
But the suspect got flustered when a customer walked in and the clerk told him to pay for the soft drink. Lester handed over his debit card, then signed the receipt "John Doe" and left without any cash.
Police traced the debit card and found Lester.

Taiwan warns drivers: Butterfly crossing ahead
Cars slow down, or even stop, during annual migration across highway

IPB Image

YUNLIN COUNTY, Taiwan - Taiwan has shut a highway lane to traffic, lowered the speed limit and put up protective nets to help a butterfly species cross the road during an annual migration.

From mid-March and for about a month, thousands of milkweed butterflies — which are native to the island off China and have distinct white dots on purple brown wings — fly over a section of freeway in central Taiwan as they move northwards to breed after spending winter in the island's warmer south.

Before the Taiwan Area National Freeway Bureau took protective measures in 2007, many butterflies were hit on the highways or killed by wind from speeding vehicles.

"More than 10,000 butterflies will spread their wings to fly high, bravely crossing the highway, on a different kind of life-or-death journey," the bureau said in a statement, calling the migration "one of a kind."

The roadkill rate of butterflies has fallen to 0.3 percent last year from 3 percent before the highway department took action, the bureau said.

The conservation project has cost $83,000 since it was first started in 2007.

The protective measures include a driving speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour (37 mph), blocking a two-mile stretch of the road when butterfly numbers exceed 500 per minute, and a 13-foot-high protective net guiding the insects to fly above traffic.

Trees have also been planted along the side of freeway to provide a longer-term, natural net.

Spiderman swings to the rescue to save frightened autistic boy trapped on window-ledge

Spiderman took a break from rescuing the citizens of New York City to help an autistic boy who became so frightened during his first day at school that he climbed through a third-floor window.

The youngster walked along the ledge and refused to come back, leaving his mother, teachers and the Bangkok fire service stumped for ways to rescue him.

It seemed an impossible situation - until his mother remembered his love of Spiderman.

Rescued: Spiderman hugs the Thai schoolboy after convincing him to come back through the window

Fireman Sonchai Yoosaba rushed back to the fire station and donned his second uniform - a Spiderman outfit which he uses to liven up school drills.

Then Spidey swung into action, getting back to the special school's window and calming the youngster down with reassuring superhero patter.

Mr Somchai said: 'I told him Spider-Man is here to rescue you, no monsters are going to attack you and I told him to walk slowly towards me as running could be dangerous.'

Pet psychic reunites wind-swept puppy with owners
Tuesday Apr 28, 2009

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Michigan - Tinker Bell has been reunited with her owners after a 70-mph (113-kph) gust of wind picked up the six-pound (2.7-kilogram) Chihuahua and tossed her out of sight.

Dorothy and Lavern Utley credit a pet psychic for guiding them on Monday to a wooded area nearly a mile (1.6 kilometers) from where 8-month-old Tinker Bell had been last seen. The brown long-haired dog was dirty and hungry but otherwise OK.

The Utleys, of Rochester, had set up an outdoor display Saturday at a flea market in Waterford Township, 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Detroit. Tinker Bell was standing on their platform trailer when she was swept away.

Dorothy Utley told The Detroit News that her cherished pet "just went wild" upon seeing her.

I read a story last week that would have been perfect for this thread but now I can't find it - It was about a police officer who was called to a building to investigate a call about two suspicious looking people seen walking to the back of a building in a commercial district.

When he got to the building, walked around the back and heard some unusual noises coming from the dumpster. He peered over the side to find a man and woman totally naked having sex amongst the garbage ohmy.gif

The end of the article made me giggle especially, it said "The 30 year old man was taken into custody on an unrelated outstanding warrant. The 24 year old woman was simply told to go home." laugh.gif

Bakery's unique theft deterrent

Daily Telegraph - May 07, 2009 02:02pm

A posh bakery in Split, Croatia, has been broken into almost every week. But not since it brought in "protection".

The shop owners posted a life-sized photo of the toughest man in Hollywood, Chuck Norris, in the window.

The sign says: "This shop is under the protection of Chuck Norris."

Now the bakery hasn't had a single burglary for more than a month.

Sales assistant Mirna Kovac said: "To be honest we just started it as a joke but it really has worked. Thieves haven't been anywhere near us for ages. People seem to respect him.

"Everyone around here has seen his films and he's quite a popular character, perhaps even among criminals, so they've decided to leave us alone."

She added that the bakery has had a few customers come in and ask us whether they can get Norris's autograph.

"They really believe he is sitting in our storeroom out the back ready to pounce on any burglars," she said.
